Creative Corner with Karen - Tim Holtz Fragments

 

I recently bought a package of Tim Holtz Fragments and decided that I would see just what I could make with them. I'm on a real altering kick right now, and I wanted to show you a way to do paper crafting that you may not have thought of before. When I first saw the Fragments, it occurred to me that they might be good for jewellery making as well as scrapbooking. You get several different sizes of tiles in each package, and many of them were perfect for what I had in mind.

To make this project, you will need paper that has a fairly small pattern. I chose my favourite paper ever, Scenic Route's Laurel line. I chose tiles of different sizes and glued the paper to the back of them using a product called Crystal Lacquer (equivalent to Diamond Glaze). I originally tried doing this with Weldbond, but found that I didn't get a good bond to the plastic. After my tiles dried, I cut them out and used glaze on the backs of them to seal the paper.

Once they were good and dry, I glued my jewellery findings to the top of the tiles (you can get these at Tumblestones, just down the road from us- and they said mention this blog post when you go in and they'll give you 10% off your findings purchase!). Bingo! With very little effort, I had two pendants. With the remaining tiles that I had made, I decided that I wanted to make a matching bracelet. I linked several of tiles together along with crystal and glass beads. It wasn't too difficult (just a little fiddly) and within a half an hour, I had a bracelet.

I've got several other ideas for things that I would like to make with the rest of my tiles. They would be perfect for making a funky set of magnets. Of course, they would also look great on the front of a simple card. These little tiles are a perfect way to use up some of the paper scraps that are building up in your stash. I didn't have to cut a single sheet for any of the projects that made here!

Creative Corner with Kerry - Masculine card for Graduation

This card is for a young man, so I needed something not too 'frilly' ... I think this suits perfectly!

 

I cut an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper in half, to create a folded 4 1/4 x 5 1/2" card.  Using my 1 3/8" square whale of a punch, I took a 'bite' out of the bottom, right hand corner. 

 

On the right hand, inside of the card, I covered the bottom third with a coordinating, patterned paper, ensuring that it was high enough to cover the square 'bite' so there wouldn't be a visible space from the front.  The top portion was a white piece, so I could write my greeting.

 

From the front, eye-ball the placement of the 'grad' metal plaque and centre it through the space, adhering it to the inside of the card.

 

Using the QK mini Metro font, I diecut the letters and numbers to spell 'Grad 2008' and adhered them to the front.

 

I threaded the metal ribbon slider with 3/4" sheer sparkly white ribbon.  Once desired placement of the slider had been achieved, I glued it down to the front of the card and then pulled both ends of the ribbon around to the inside and adhered them to the inside cover, overlapping and neatly trimming the ends.

 

Tip:  When I mail cards that have embellishments on the front such as this, or rhinestones, I take the other half of the 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper, fold it and slip the card in between.  This gives added protection when the envelope goes through the auto stamper/sorter at the post office.  Alternatively, you may request that it be 'hand canceled' which would also save wear and tear on your card.

New members of the family

My parents just went back to Saskatchewan (my mom was born there) to visit relatives.  They stayed with her cousin Matt and his wife Gail on their big farm.  Matt and Gail have many animals including two border collies.  These two border collies recently had 7 puppies. 

Now, those of you who know my mom, know that when her dog Sally passed away last year, she was affected way more than she thought she would be.  Sally was her constant companion and she missed her terribly.  She said that that was it for having dogs.

Well, after being around these new puppies for a week, guess who came home with not one, but TWO new puppies!  Yup, my mom and dad are now the proud owners of two adorable border collies named Maddie and Matteo.  They tried to get pictures in the studio yesterday, but the dogs just wanted to play.  We are all going up to our cabin this weekend, so I'll try to get better photos to show you their cute faces!

A few of PE's customers are close to a family with a son named Ben. Ben has been battling leukemia for the last 5 1/2 years.  He has relapsed for the second time, and no one on the registry matches him, so they are going to do a partial match transplant in July.  There is high risk of infection and rejection, so this is it. 

The teachers' association of Maple Ridge has organized a fund raiser for the family tonight Friday June 27th at Houston's Pub  The tickets are $20, and $15 goes directly to the family, as the pub manager is only taking $5 which covers the dinner and a drink for each person.  They have organized a 50/50 draw, as well as a
silent auction.

 If you would like to buy a ticket you can call the
MR teachers association at 467-2111. There will be a Rolling Stones cover band playing called Steelwheels and apparently it is like listening to the Stones. They are considered the best in Western Canada.  They are playing for free, so the $20 buys you dinner, 1 drink and the band and the chance to help a family through every parent's worst nightmare.

And if you are the praying type (and even if you aren't), say a little prayer for Benjamin and his family.

Had a great time at the Soiree last weekend.  You can see the photos in the album to the right titled Soiree June 21, 2008.  So much fun and everyone worked hard to get their cards done yet still had time to laugh and shop.  Can't wait until the next one next January.

Last Day of School

The last day of school is one of my favourite days of the year!  I love having my girls home and the calmer routines that summer brings.  This summer I am really going to focus on doing SOMETHING with my photos and the girls have expressed a keen interest on scrapbooking this summer too.  I'm looking forward to our fundraising crop July 26th and hope to see many of you there.

Creative Corner with Kerry - Card design when you are in a hurry

 

“This is the design I use when I’m in a hurry.  It’s very versatile and can be used for all occasions.  In this case, I needed a baby shower card and I always like to personalize them.

Cut cardstock to 5 ½  x 11” .  I used scraps from 2 coordinating pieces of patterned Tres Jolie paper.  You could also use double sided paper and simply reverse one piece.  Cut one piece 5 ¼ x 3 1/4” .  Cut the second piece 5 ¼ x 2”.  Place the pieces together, upside down on your desk and run a strip of adhesive all the way across the join.  Cut a strip of ¾” wide silk duponi ribbon.  Place the middle of the ribbon over the adhesive at the back, pressing firmly down.  Bring ends of ribbon around to the front and tie an off-centered bow, trimming edges on an angle.  Adhere whole front to the front of the cardstock. 

 Using QK Blossom font, and Quickstripz paper, diecut the letters you need to spell out name.  Adhere to top portion of card.  Highlight letters with Stickles, if desired.  Punch out a tag shape and use Pebbles rubons, or hand write/stamp greeting.  Attach tag with thin string (discretely) to ribbon, so that it hangs freely.  And of course, use scraps to decorate and stamp the inside, so it looks as appealing as the front!
