Halloween Costume idea : Creative Corner with Karen

Here's a slightly different way that I used my Big Shot and some Quickutz dies:

  Hi everyone! I know that this is super last minute, and you've probably already got your Halloween costumes ready, but I wanted to pass along a way that I used my new Big Shot, and Quickutz dies for my costume this year. My husband and I curl on Thursday nights and we just had our annual Halloween party. Every year we're all encouraged to dress up and there are prizes for the best costumes.

This year we came up with the idea of doing a Miss America theme. Our team is mixed, so let the comedy of that idea play around in your heads for a moment.... Every beauty contestant MUST have a sash, and this is where my die cuts came in. I used my new Big Shot, and my Blossom Grand and Mini fonts to cut out the phrases 'Miss America' Miss Congeniality' etc from stiff felt. I then attached them to a sash with glue dots. We were quite a sight, but everyone agreed that the sashes made the costumes. In fact, our skip won for best costume! (he was Miss America!)

There are quite a few ways that you could use your die cuts for Halloween. You could cut out stars for a super hero costume, or reflective tape for greater visibility. I hope that you all have a safe and fun Halloween!

Your help is needed

Have you ever had one of those days when you are running around with too much to do and you don't have time to eat or you forget to eat and then all of a sudden you are super hungry and grumpy and you have a headache?  Think about how that would be if that happened on a regular basis, and you couldn't just open your fridge to fix it. That is a reality for many in our community.

The Friends in Need foodbank in our community is in desperate need of food. They are in danger of having to cut back their services or close their doors. Lets help them get to the Christmas season when donating food is more on people's minds.

There shouldn't be people in our community that are hungry, no matter what the circumstances that brought them there are. It is very difficult to think, to learn, to do the right thing, if you are hungry. 34% of their clients are children!   Children need food to grow and to learn and to play.  Their little bellies shouldn't be wondering when food will be available. They also have many seniors whose pensions just aren't lasting until the end of the month.

Photo Express is now a drop off location for food for the Friends in Need Foodbank.  And to encourage you to bring in food everytime you come in or are in the area, you will receive an entry ticket for each food item you bring in from now until November 15th. What can you win? A new Digital Camera! (To be drawn on Novemer 15th, you don't have to be present to win.)

Any nonperishable food items are great.  Make sure the food is unopened and hasn't expired. They are in extra need of canned fruit, kids recess snacks (granola bars, pudding cups, juice boxes), bottled water and Gatorade, and diabetic stuff as many of the elderly are diabetic.

Feel good knowing you are helping someone who needs a little extra help and you might even win a camera in the process.  Thanks for your generosity!  What you give out always comes back tenfold!

And here is some info from the Food Bank

The Friends in Need FOOD BANK was founded in 1989 by two women in Pitt Meadows, who saw the need to assist the hungry in their community. Since that time, Friends has grown from a basement operation to a 3,200 sq ft warehouse in Maple Ridge, with a secondary distribution depot at the Grace Church in Pitt Meadows.

The food bank distributes to well over 600 families and singles in a month. As well it assists 7 community agencies to provide food and nourishment to those who are hungry. The food bank usually receives over 105,000 kilograms of food donations each year. These are donations from local groceries, bakeries, retailers and community members.  This year due to increased food costs, increased gas costs, higher registrations (25 new registrations per month), and loss of some of our reclamation donations, we have been struggling.

Friends in Need are a member of the CAFB - BC Branch. It abides by their Code of Ethics and does not promote door to door or by telephone solicitation. We depend solely on the generosity of our community and its members.  To donate or volunteer, please call (604) 466-FOOD (3663).

Creative Corner with Tanya - Another Use for the Stamping Green Tree

I decided to try an experiment this weekend.  Using the limited edition "Stamping Green Tree" (K5062) from Hero Arts and some of the gorgeous Micro Fine Glitter from Glitter Ritz in the following colors Cinnamon, Moss Green, Peridot,  Kiwi Green, Fire Red and Cool Highlight .  I stamped the tree using brown ink onto my base and then using the 2 way Squeeze & Roll glue pen from ZIG I first traced intermittent lines on the tree then dumped the glitter on over the glue and let it sit for about five minutes then tipped the excess glitter off and then in the same fashion and in three different time frames did the leaves and then the red berries and then lastly the white berries.  I then left the finished card to sit for a while and when it was nice and dry took a soft brush and gently brushed off the excess glitter.  This glue added some really nice dimension to my leaves and to my berries and I really like the way it turned out, it was far less effort than I had anticipated.  Now you give it a try!

Easy Photo Contest - Win a Camera!

The contest is called "Then & Now" and it coincides with PE's 25th Anniversary.  To enter, submit 3 things:

• A photo of yourself or family circa 1983, the year PE opened (or, if you are not old enough, a baby photo)

PE's 25th Anniversary Party - Nov 15th

25th Anniversary crop is sold out - You guys rock!

Wow, you guys always amaze me.  The lineup for our 25th anniversary crop started at just after 4am and when Renee arrived at 6:30 to hand out numbers, there was already 43 people in line! Here they are all toasty warm (I wish there was some other way to do the lineup, but this would disrupt the store too much if it was during regular store hours.)

Breast Cancer Month

As you are probably aware, October is breast cancer month.  Please, please, please remember to check your breasts (and men too!) and have regular checkups.  I'm now of the age to have mammograms and had my first one last spring.  Gotta love it when they say "now don't move". In my head I'm saying "you have to be kidding me! You have my  breast squished between metal plates so tight I can barely breathe and you are worried about me moving!  Very funny! " All in all, it wasn't painful, just a weird feeling.  And heck, it saves lives.

Kate took a little piece of the ribbon in our store and did a little symbol with it.  Very easy to do and great for cards.

Again, make sure to check those "babies"!

Creative Corner with Sarah - Altering a plain box

 I turned a plain box into an elegant altered box - perfect for a small gift or as a keepsake box. First paint the box with Making Memories Gold Paint, then add some K & Company paper, some Making Memories flowers and some bling and voila - beautiful and easy.
